"Trío Surcari: La armónica unión musical
del altiplano con el caribe"

Uno de los grupos que mas relevancia adquirió en el
pasado año 2006 es "Surcari" integrado por la conocida guitarrista
Lorena Garay de Puerto Rico, y los veteranos músicos chilenos Eugenio Huanca y
Tani Cruz.
"Estos vocalistas e instrumentalistas han
encontrado la formula ideal de coexistencia de dos expresiones culturales
aparentemente sin una conexión aparente, pero que a través del trabajo y la
creatividad de Eugenio, Lorena y Tani, están descubriendo nexos de mucha
importancia para la expresión contemporánea musical de Latinoamérica,"
dijo Andrés Basso, critico de música y arte de New Haven que les vio en una de
sus presentaciones efectuadas en la Universidad de Connecticut.
Los tres artistas con su propia historia musical
individual plasman una expresión musical distinta que sea suramericana o
caribeña, es realmente genuina desde un punto de vista de las dos culturas. Sin
embargo, de sus trabajos también emerge algo nuevo que recobra lo típico de la
Isla del Encanto y de la expresión clásica española, y la rica herencia musical
del altiplano y Sudamérica.
Lorena Garay comenzó su carrera en Puerto Rico y la
continuó en Hartford vinculándose desde su llegada a nuestra ciudad con el
maestro Daniel Salazar, y con José González del legendario "Criollo
Clásico." Además de ser una de las mejores interpretes de la música
clásica de la región, Lorena no olvidó sus raíces y en sus presentaciones se
transforma también en una eximia cuatrista en cuyas manos el instrumento típico
de la isla del encanto irradia sus mejores sonidos y ritmos.
Eugenio Huanca por su parte, artista chileno
proveniente de la región de Iquique, tiene su propia historia musical ligada
por mas de tres décadas a Roberto Clavijo, otro músico chileno de la ciudad de
Arica. Ambos dieron vida en la década de los 80' con otros conocidos artistas
al conjunto "Quetzal," y mas tarde Eugenio se vincula al
internacional grupo "Altiplano" donde conoce a Tani Cruz quien con
este conjunto hizo giras por Europa, Latinoamérica, y los Estados Unidos.
A poco andar, Lorena, Eugenio, y Tani descubren las
vibraciones comunes de la música e inician una nueva jornada con
"Surcari," la combinación de las palabras Suramérica y Caribe.
En sus presentaciones el grupo que en un breve
periodo de tiempo ha establecido su reconocido prestigio, se aprecia la diversidad
y habilidad de los chilenos que son capaces de transportar a la audiencia a las
alturas del Altiplano, descender a las regiones musicales del Paraguay, Chile y
Ecuador, y con Lorena traer al espectador a la música del caribe impregnada del
sonido de África y del arte jíbaro.
En la actualidad estos virtuosos artistas están
preparando un disco compacto que saldrá a la luz en el mes de abril y que
estamos seguros será una buena muestra del arte de "Surcari." Sus
interpretaciones buscan la perfección en lo musical y exploran las vetas
sentimentales de los temas en que la voz del cuatro y el sonido de las flautas
andinas proyectan originalidad y sentido altamente creativo.
Entre los muchos proyectos para el ano 2007,
"Surcari" estará presentandose en otoño en la Noche Latina de la
Universidad de Connecticut, sede de West Hartford. Para el lanzamiento del
disco compacto están anunciando una actividad de alturas que anunciaremos en
estas páginas.

A Treasure Trio
Trio Surcari, featuring Lorena Garay, makes rock
look immature and graceless

Lorena Garay: classical beauty, inside and out.
Every six months or so I discover an artist living
and working here in Connecticut who I really feel should be bombarded with
roses, large bills, record deals and whatever other accolades Advocate readers
can conjure up. This past weekend, it was Lorena Garay, a Hartford-based
classical guitarist. Garay is a Puerto Rican native who came to Hartford to
earn her master´s from The Hartt School. On Saturday, she played at the West
Hartford UConn campus with Trio Surcari, who fuse Garay´s guitar with Andean
instruments. They were excellent.
For those who usually approach guitar from a rock
perspective, classical guitar offers a bracing reminder of just what the
instrument is really capable of. The compositions ripple with a geometry that
rock´s ragged edges obscure. But Trio Surcari´s selections don´t come off as
too refined or rarefied, largely due to the handling of multi-instrumentalists
Eugenio Huanca and Estanislao Cruz. Each has a staggering array of tools at his
disposal, from string instruments made out of armadillo shells to pan pipes to
unusual percussion. The lead and rhythm responsibilities switch off faster than
the eye can track. Although Garay may sit at center stage and do the least
instrument-switching, the Trio is no showcase vehicle. There´s an equal
division of labor, especially in moments like when Huanca and Cruz trade licks
in stereo over towering sets of pan pipes.
As for Garay herself, she exhibits incredible
endurance on stage. Her eyelids close shortly after she begins playing, and
they stay that way except for the briefest of glimpses at the neck of her
guitar. Hardly a muscle in her face shifts as she runs down angular Latin
melodies and bouncy mambo rhythms. Clapton may make guitars weep; Garay makes
hers sing, shout, and dance. And while looks have precious little to do with
music, Garay´s beauty is so obvious that it seems foolish not to mention. We´re
lucky to have such a trio in our state. They could easily make their home in
bigger, busier places.
Later Saturday night, I headed to Otter´s Pub,
where Witchunt played popular rock covers. Another weekend, another cover band
that didn´t make a mistake while covering Sublime. And I thought boy bands were
disposable!

A Touch of Spain in “The Woods”
The results of Spanish Night, co-sponsored by CONNECT and
the Clubhouse, can be summed-up in one word SPECTACULAR!
A large turn out of residents filled the dining room and
marveled at the versatility of Chef Trevor to produce authentic and delectable
Spanish gourmet delights. If you ever doubted that Roland and his staff could
produce the impossible, this event would put all those doubts to rest.
Diners proceeded to the North Lounge where they joined
other residents who were treated to a truly amazing concert by the accomplished
guitarist, LORENA GARAY and her fellow musician, EUGENIO HUANCA. These two remarkable entertainers
took their audience on a musical journey through Puerto Rico and many South
American countries, including a truly memorable visit to the rain Forest. The
sum of their performance was far more than we had expected and earned them a
rousing, standing ovation.
In response to the many requests from residents, CONNECT
will indeed host these talented artists again in the near future.
